Founder

Founder (Biography and his accomplishments)

ABU AMEENAH BILAL PHILIPS is a Jamaican – Canadian Islamic Scholar who converted to Islam in 1972. He completed a BA from the Islamic University of Medina, an M.A. from King Saud University in Riyadh, and a Ph.D. in Islamic Theology from the University of Wales, UK (1994).

Dr. Bilal spent ten (10) years teaching Islamic studies in an Islamic high school in Riyadh, and another eighteen (18) years lecturing in Arabic and Islamic studies in the American University in Dubai, UAE, the Islamic Studies Academy in Doha, Qatar, Knowledge International University of Riyadh, and Preston International College, Chennai, India.

But perhaps his greatest achievement, and the one for which he was listed in the Jordanian publication among “The 500 Most Influential Muslims”, is his historic founding of the mega-university, the International Open University, which has in only seven (7) years since its inception, over 270,000 students registered from 228 different countries around the world!

Who We Are

The International Open University (IOU) aims to grant global access to quality undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate level education programs for students at virtually no cost. Its mission is to change the Muslim Nation and the world situation through appropriate, Islamized education.

Making authentic Islamic knowledge readily available to the world through the Internet solely for God’s pleasure is a noble life goal and a mission well worth sacrificing all of one’s energies and means for.

IOU History (Bahasa,Russian Campus)

The International Open University (IOU) is the brainchild of Dr. Bilal Philips. IOU’s journey began in 2007 with the launch of free online Diploma courses in its Open Campus. In 2010, after just 3 years, the Bachelor of Arts (BA) program was launched.

The University now has seven colleges offering accredited online degree programs: College of Education, College of Islamic Economics, College of Banking & Finance, College of Psychology, College of Islamic Studies, College of Business Administration, College of Information Technology, and the College of Arabic Language and Linguistics.

In addition, IOU’s Global Qur’an Memorization Center presents a unique opportunity for students across the globe to study the Qur’an online.

After successfully making authentic Islamic knowledge available in English, Bahasa, and Russian, IOU is launching IOU Urdu.

Our Vision, Mission, and Goals

IOU has been empowering and educating people for more than a decade and IOU Urdu is a brainchild of our very own faculty member Shaikh Molana Mukhtar. After successfully making authentic Islamic knowledge available in English, Bahasa and Russian, now we are launching IOU Urdu.

Our vision is to be the source of authentic Islamic knowledge for millions of Urdu speakers around the world.

Our mission is to educate millions of Urdu speakers around the world with authentic Islamic knowledge as per the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah.

Our goal is to launch a Bachelors’s in Islamic studies followed by Diploma in Islamic studies in collaboration with Wafaqul Madaris Pakistan.

Prevention of Terrorism and Extremism

The International Open University (IOU) denounces, in the strongest terms, terrorism and all forms of extremism against any people, community, or country regardless of religion, color, race, or political views. Such acts have both a devastating and detrimental effect on humanity and society as a whole. Terroristic acts committed by misguided souls also tarnish the image of Islam. These actions of a few distort perceptions of Muslims, which results in negative stereotypes that increase Islamophobia within our societies.

Teachers at IOU

The qualified teachers, scholars, life-coaches, and professionals that teach at the International Open University are comprised of various ethnic backgrounds and come from all corners of the world. Despite the varying experiences, they all possess a shared love of learning and a desire to spread authentic and beneficial knowledge.

Our teachers strive very hard to present their courses, lectures, notes, and presentations in the most effective manner to benefit our students and the general public (in cases of public courses/events).

The views expressed in the lectures and presentations made for IOU classes, meetings, webinars, or other IOU events, are solely those of the speakers and not, necessarily, of the IOU.

Submissions or the presence of speakers at IOU classes and activities do not constitute an endorsement of the speaker or the speaker’s views by the International Open University.

What We Teach at IOU

The International Open University does not teach any form of terrorism or violence in any of its courses, webinars, events, or activities of the University. We are entirely focused on academic teaching to build a culture of tolerance and peaceful coexistence, that fosters academic research as well as intellectual development and growth. The International Open University is committed to providing beneficial knowledge at the lowest possible cost to make education freely and widely available. We are therefore committed to civic engagement, and realize that universities must play a significant role in creating a generation of individuals who are educated and equipped with beneficial knowledge that instills a sense of awareness of social responsibility to benefit their communities as productive citizens. The University’s Stance toward Students, Staff, and Volunteers Found Promoting Terrorism/Extremism

The International Open University has a zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism and extremism in all forms. Any student, staff member, or volunteer found promoting any form of terrorism/extremism will be dealt with by the University with immediate effect.
